Resolution for the
Establishment of a Partnership Between
Fayetteville State University and the Cumberland County Schools to Promote
Character Education in North Carolina
Signed on April 4,
2002 by Dr. Willis B. McLeod, Chancellor of Fayetteville State University,
and Dr. William C. Harrison, Superintendent of Cumberland County Schools
Whereas, Fayetteville
State University and the Cumberland County Schools have a history of
positive collaboration in dealing with educational issues facing the
citizens of Cumberland and surrounding counties; and,
Whereas, the North
Carolina General Assembly has mandated with the "Student Citizen Act
of 2001" of House Bill 195 (click
here for text of House Bill 195) the inclusion of character education
in all public schools in North Carolina; and,
Whereas, the National
Education Act, "No Child Left Behind," and North Carolina’s
ABC plan require schools to be accountable for student academic
achievement, including the elimination of the achievement gap between
majority and minority students; and,
Whereas, positive
character development contributes to and enhances academic achievement;
and,
Whereas, Fayetteville
State University and the Cumberland County Schools have the expertise and
resources to help all schools address these issues;
Therefore, be it
resolved that Fayetteville State University and the Cumberland County
Schools establish a partnership dedicated to the promotion,
implementation, and evaluation of successful character education programs
in North Carolina; and
Therefore, be
it further resolved that this partnership will strive to accomplish the
following three goals:
- To present an annual summer institute to
provide information and guidance to educators and citizens in the
promotion and implementation of successful character education
initiatives.
- To provide an ongoing source of support for
character education programs by making available informational
resources and consultants who can assist schools and school districts
in their efforts to enhance character development programs.
- To integrate character education and
development into the teacher education curricula at Fayetteville State
University.
