History is about TIME in human affairs: both the changes that occur more or less rapidly and the continuities that persist for decades, centuries, or millenia. Although history is about more than names and dates, it is essential to know what came before and what after. Historical causality depends on the order of events.

Instructions

The Timeline Exercise asks the student to identify significant events for the time and place assigned. It consists of two parts:

  1. Names and Dates: Place significant events on the timeline in relative chronological order, with the dates of the events. Identify them and explain their importance. See instructions for specific assignments for further information on the events to be included.
  2. Causes and Consequences: For one significant event, briefly discuss three causes and three consequences of the event. Again, see instructions for specific assignments for events to be analyzed.

Use the attached Timeline Exercise form.
