Introduction

Any historical study requires a knowledge of four things:

The Online History Workbook is designed to help students address these questions systematically, by providing exercises to elicit this knowledge from lectures and readings.  Use this Workbook in conjunction with the guidelines for specific assignments, which will be either handed out or announced in class.

For all exercises, BE SURE TO DO THE ASSIGNED TIME AND PLACE! Many serious problems arise from failure to stick to the assignment--a timeline about the French Revolution is useless if the assignment is the unification of Germany.

Students who complete these exercises successfully will not only have a knowledge of specific times and places.  They will also have a set of questions and concepts they can bring to the study of any historical time and place.

Links to the instructions for individual exercises can be found at the top of this page and on the left navigation bar.
