WORLD CIVILIZATION TO 1600--WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1
ESSAY DUE: HIST110-03  FEBRUARY 7, 2002 & HIST110-05 FEBRUARY 6, 2002

I.   ORIGINAL ESSAY: CIVILIZATION
 Based upon the readings from your text, class discussion, and TWO MORE SOURCES OF YOUR CHOICE (ONLY ONE (1) MAY BE AN ENCYCLOPEDIA), use two civilizations were are studying to illustrate the concept of civilization.  Define the criteria for a civilization. Then choose two of the civilizations we are discussing, and show how they each fulfill the criteria.  Next contrast the two examples with one another.

II. FORM
    INTRODUCTION TO THE THEME--In Paragraph 1 tell what you are going to discuss in the paper--what are you hoping the reader will learn from the points that you will make.
    MIDDLE PARAGRAPHS:
     Give the details that back up the point of view that you have stated in your introduction this includes definitions and specific examples that illustrate the points you have made
     Pay attention to transition paragraphs when writing so that you move from one point smoothly into the next
     Make points as to how the two examples are similar and how they are dissimilar
    CONCLUSION: Paragraph discussing how you have proved your point.

III. MECHANICS
   The paper should be a MINIMUM of five (5) typed pages, with regular font and one inch margins.  When using a computer,  you should save your work to a disk.  If using a typewriter, you should make a copy of your assignment
   I expect you to use what you learned in class and from the textbook as the basis of what you are writing, therefore, I do not expect you to use footnotes unless you use something specific from your outside sources
   Bibliography--REQUIRED--should include the two outside sources
    THE ENCYCLOPEDIA IS NOT A VALID SOURCE FOR ANY COLLEGE LEVEL ASSIGNMENT
    The Bibliography counts 10 points of the grade

   Try to allow time to write the assignment and exchange them with your study partners.  Critique one another's work.
      use spell checker/and or grammar checker on the computer
       read the paper aloud to yourself--if you do not understand what it says then that is a clear indication you need to work on it
